Vice-Consul Chris Istrati visits “Carabela” children’s club
On March 30, Public Affairs Officer Chris Istrati visited the Sverdlovsk Regional Children Public Organization “Carabela.” Its fame as one of the most efficient children’s NGO in Russia has grown over the years since its foundation in 1961 by children’s writer Vladislav Krapivin. The aim of the NGO is to unite children of different ages, many of them from socially disadvantaged families. The basic activities of “Carabela” are mastery of seafaring, nautical knot-tying, fencing, yacht building, journalism, history of the fleet, and photo and video filming. The NGO is headed by USG alumna Larisa Krapivina, a relative of the founder.
On March 30 “Carabela” hosted an award ceremony for winners of the Library Lovers’ contest, a city wide project organized by the American Center in Yekaterinburg. More than 150 students from 6 universities and 15 schools of Yekaterinburg contributed their works to the contest. PAO Chris Istrati congratulated the winners and awarded them with diplomas, U.S. published books and IIP materials. He also shared his childhood memories as a Boy Scout and his early love of libraries where he “devoured books” and enjoyed traveling with his imagination through the pages of a book
