We encourage people to apply for a visa 4-6 weeks before they intend to travel. Most visas can be issued in much less time but some applications require special clearances or extra administrative processing. In extremely rare instances it can take longer to get a visa.

All visa applicants must now appear in person before a Consul for an interview. The only possible exceptions to this policy are people under 14 or over 80 and applicants for diplomatic (A and G) visas.

Step 1:

Complete the necessary application forms in English. You can download the forms or pick them up at one of the Pony Express offices .

Step 2:

Go to your nearest Pony Express office to schedule an interview appointment. You will need:

•  Your passport

•  A completed and signed application form

•  One recent color photograph taken against a white background and measuring

about 2 inches x 2 inches (50mm x 50mm).

•  Any supporting documentation that you feel will help to demonstrate the purpose of your trip, the availability of funds to cover the trip, and your ties to Russia which will compel you to return home after a brief stay in the United States . Documents which show your personal financial situation, such as a letter verifying your employment, are particularly important. Submit photocopies only.

•  The non-refundable $131 (payable in Rubles only) visa application fee plus the variable Pony Express service fee .

Step 3:

Come to the Consulate at the appointed time for your interview, bringing original copies of supporting documents you have submitted to Pony Express . To expedite security procedures, bags and electronic devices, including mobile phones, should be left at home whenever possible. Directions to the Consulate .

Step 4:

In most cases, the Consul will determine an applicant's eligibility for a visa at the interview. If a visa is approved, the passport and visa will be returned to the applicant via Pony Express. Contact Pony Express directly for delivery times as they vary by region and the type of service requested. Also see How the Consul Makes Decisions .
