In recognition of the 200 th anniversary of the U.S.-Russian diplomatic relations, the U.S. Consulate General in Yekaterinburg invites you to participate in an interschool dialogue on life and achievements of John Quincy Adams.
John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States . Before the presidency he was a lawyer, a professor at the Harvard University, a minister to the Netherlands, Prussia, Great Britain, and Russia (in 1809 John Quincy Adams arrived in Russia as the first official diplomatic representative of the United States), the U.S. Senator, and one of greatest Secretaries of State. After leaving the White House, John Quincy Adams became one of the most respected members of the House of Representatives. As a Congressman he fought the “gag rule” that shelved antislavery petitions and became known as “Old Man Eloquent”.
We invite the high schools in the U.S. and the Urals and Western Siberia in Russia to create project groups of students guided by teachers of English or History; connect the project groups in Russia and the U.S. to explore any particular aspect of John Quincy Adams' political activities; and as the outcome, to present joint projects, which celebrate best qualities of the political leaders and the values John Quincy Adams promoted.
John Quincy Adams kept a diary for many years including a period when he, being just 14 y. o., served as an interpreter for the American envoy to Russia . The St. Petersburg diaries 1781-82 of Adams could be one of the main sources for joint research by American and Russian schoolchildren.
The contest should establish connections between the future leaders in the U.S. and Russia by studying the life of the first U.S. Minister to Russia who was an honest and devoted statesman. |
