Obtaining a Second U.S. Passport
The Department of State may issue a second U.S. passport when justified on a case by case basis. The second valid passport will be valid for a period of 30 months. Thereafter, a new passport must be applied for; second valid passports are not extendable.
To apply for a second valid passport by mail please follow these instructions.
To apply for a second valid passport in person, you will need to make an appointment and submit the following documents:
- Application form DS-82
- Submit either your current valid passport or current second valid passport (in you already have one);
- An affidavit (PDF 30KB) attesting to the use of the second passport;
- Two recent identical color photographs. They must be two inches by two inches (5cm x 5cm) and the size of the head (from hair to chin) must be between .75 inches and 1 inch (2.5 to 3.5cm). The background must be plain and light-colored;
- The $110 application fee.
Processing time
Passports are printed in the United States with a secure photo-digitized image of the bearer. You should allow for up to seven working days for your application to be processed. Domestic mailing, depending on the destination, takes additional 1-3 days one way.
Appointment System for American Citizen Services
The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit uses an Appointment System for all services, including passport renewals (and passport extra pages), birth registrations, notarial services, and general inquiries.
Please make your appointment before you visit the Consular Section. Appointments may be made by calling the ACS Unit at 7 (343) 379-3001. Appointments are available Wednesdays (2:00 pm - 4:00 pm) and Fridays (9:00 am - 12:00 pm or 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm).
