WW II Film Draws Big Crowd in Perm April 4
April 4, 2005
Perm high-school and college students were eager to meet with CG Scott Rauland, who visited the American Corner in Perm to donate a copy of the Band of Brothers and attend the showing of Part 2 of the popular World War II film series. The showing was followed by an historical quiz on the U.S. participation in the war. The moderators were young alumni of U.S. exchange programs. Their questions were far from simple, but quiz participants demonstrated a very high level of knowledge of World War II history. What was lendlease? When and where did WWII start? Who was the U.S. President at the time? What was D-Day? These, and many other questions, were answered promptly and correctly. The quiz was followed by a general discussion, in which CG Rauland took part. Why did it come to a Cold War? Why was it only in 1944 that a second front in Europe was opened? Would the U.S. have entered the War at all, had there not been Pearl Harbor? The young participants discussed all those complicated problems with genuine interest in an honest search for truth.
