April 12, 2005
Consul General Scott Rauland visited Komi-Permyak Autonomous Okrug on April 5th. In Kudymkar, the okrug’s capital, he met with the Governor, Gennadiy Pertovich Savelyev, and with the Mayor of Kudymkar, Aleksandr Alekseyevich Klimovich. One of the major topics for discussion was the forthcoming merger of Komi-Permyak Okrug and Perm Oblast scheduled for December 1, 2005. A highlight of the visit was the Consul General’ s meeting with staff and students of Kudymkar’s teachers’ college. The college trains primary school teachers for the okrug’s rural schools. CG Rauland met with a class majoring in English and talked with the students in English. The young people were eager for more contacts with the U.S. and would like to take part in exchange programs with American students.
Another highlight was a visit to a local farmer, Sergey Petukhov, who told the CG and staff about his experiences with running a private farm, which primarily produces seed and feed grain. The CG also visited a local history museum in Kudymkar , where a Komi-Permyak folklore group, Shondiban, staged a colorful song-and-dance performance for the guests.
