Lend-Lease Books Exhibit at Belinka

An exhibit of American books given to Russian citizens or libraries as part of the Lend-Lease program is on display at Sverdlovsk Oblast’s Belinskiy Library. The exhibit is an ideal follow up to a recent Consulate sponsored lecture at the library on lend-lease by Hubert Van Tyull for secondary school teachers. As Consul General Rauland mentioned in his remarks, this exhibit illustrates that the lend-lease program was not all about governmental efforts. While the government arranged for supplies of weapons, mechanics and raw materials to the Soviet Union, American charity organizations and individuals collected and sent humanitarian goods, such as these books. Despite the ideological barriers that once divided our countries, the WWII alliance has become a solid basis for our current partnership.
