May 26, 2006
The U.S. Consulate General took part in the 11th annual conference of the Russian Library Association, which was held May 16th to 19th in Yekaterinburg. At the opening of the conference Consul General John Stepanchuk greeted the librarians, who came from all regions of Russia. Mr. Stepanchuk said the Consulate General was ready for cooperation with Urals and Western Siberian libraries.
The Consulate General organized a visit by Ann Symons, who was President of the American Library Association in 1997 and 1998, and is now a librarian at the Anglo-American School in Moscow. Mrs. Symons made two presentations - “Opportunities for Cooperation with American Libraries” and “Library Advocacy Now!”
The Consulate also organized a digital videoconference with Sara Kelly Johns, who will serve as the president of the American Association of School Libraries in 2007 - 2008. Participants of the videoconference discussed how to use modern technology in school libraries, what education librarians need, the activities of national programs to support school libraries, and the future of school libraries.
The Information Resource Center of the U.S. Consulate General took part in the session devoted to international relations. The IRC Director made a presentation on U.S. International Information Programs, academic and professional exchange programs for librarians, and other related projects. Librarians expressed strong interest in the free electronic newsletter on American libraries that the IRC prepares every week in Russian.
