Klenovskoye Orphanage Outing
July 26, 2006
On July 26, the Consulate arranged an outing twenty-nine children, ranging in age from 4 to 16, at the Klenovskoye Orphanage. The outing included a visit to the Fire Museum, lunch in a restaurant and swimming at the water park.
We set off at 9am by bus from the village of Klenovskoye to Yekaterinburg for our first stop, the Fire Museum. This proved to be a good choice because the museum offers specialized tours for children of different ages, giving each age group a chance to see and handle fire equipment, while also learning age-appropriate fire safety information.
After the Fire Museum, we traveled a short distance for lunch. This was the first time most of the children had ever eaten in a restaurant. The staff seemed to enjoy working with the children and went out of their way to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
After lunch, we boarded the bus for the hour-long journey to the water park, which was the highlight of the trip for the children. Everyone seemed to have fun in the water, a rare treat in a part of Russia that is frozen for more than half the year.
To end the day, and to pass the time on the long bus drive back to Klenovskoye, the children enjoyed a snack of Subway sandwiches and Pepsi products, which had been generously donated by the respective companies.
Overall, the day was a resounding success in the eyes of the children, orphanage administrators and Consulate staff.
