NGO Fights to Stop Domestic Violence in Chelyabinsk
August 3, 2005
On July 8th , the NGO “Sodeistvie”, lead by Chelyabinsk City Duma Deputy Natalya Baskova, hosted a conference analyzing the results of their anti-domestic violence campaign. The program aims to educate Militsia in Chelyabinsk Oblast through a series of seminars and community meetings on the problem of domestic violence and create eight resource points for victims (4 in Chelyabinsk and 4 in smaller cities) that are staffed by trained militsia. The project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Due to these efforts the first-ever places for victims of domestic violence have been launched in Chelyabinsk Oblast as well as a step-by-step change of the militia’s attitude to the issues of domestic violence has started.
