Consul General John Stepanchuk Arrives in Yekaterinburg

John Stepanchuk is a career member of the Foreign Service. Before assuming his duties as Consul General in Yekaterinburg, he served as Counselor for Economic Affairs in Athens. Other overseas postings included Kiev, Vilnius, Moscow, Izmir and Conakry. In his most recent Washington assignment, he served as a liaison with the U.S. Congress on legislative exchanges and assistance programs with Russia and the Newly Independent States. Prior to that, he worked on establishing scientific, cultural and educational exchange programs with the former USSR.
Mr. Stepanchuk first visited Russia in 1977 as a guide on a U.S. cultural exchange exhibit which toured Ufa, Novosibirsk and Moscow. Before joining the Foreign Service, he worked as a researcher at the Library of Congress on Middle Eastern affairs. He holds a bachelors degree in political science from Boston University and did his post graduate work at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies in international law and economics. His languages include Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, German, French, Turkish and Arabic.
Mr. Stepanchuk is single and enjoys a variety of sports and cultural activities. He has performed in a number of choral groups specializing in Byzantine and Russian liturgical music. He is a native of Nashua, New Hampshire.
