August 25, 2004

On August 25, 2004 U.S. Consul General Scott Rauland hosted a lunch for the participants of the professional exchange program “Promoting Multiculturalism: Ethnic Diversity and Civic Life” supported by the U.S. State Department. 11 participants representing religious institutes, municipal committees, ethnic, cultural and human rights NGOs, universities, and the media of 6 cities – Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Kamensk-Uralskiy, Ufa, Orenburg, and Tyumen -- were amongst the participants. In September this group will go to the USA for three weeks to meet with U.S. experts from governmental and non-profit organizations and universities.

During lunch the program’s participants discussed tolerance issues in different oblasts and the projects that they implement to improve relations amongst different ethnic groups. These projects include a TV program on Islam in Russia, creating and disseminating informational brochures to help migrants, launching a Migration Center, etc. The guests are sure that this exchange program will give them new ideas and approaches, and help them establish long-term contacts.
