Rememberance of September 11th in Yekaterinburg
September 11, 2004

On September 11th Scott Rauland, U.S. Consul General, Bradley Hurst, Public Affairs Officer, and Mathew Purl, Pol/Econ Officer met with local university students at the American Center on the third anniversary of the September 11th terror attacts. Students from the Ural State University, Institute of International Relations, and the Italian College of the USU watched the documentary"Searching for the Roots of 9/11"by Thomas Friedman. In this film Mr. Friedman , tries to answer two questions: What drove young, middle-class Muslim men to give up their lives to murder almost 3,000 people? And why does their violent act elicit support from millions of Muslims throughout the world?

Following the film, the students and American diplomats discussed terrorism and the recent attacks in Russia. Participants shared their view on how governments, international organizations, and citizens can fight terrorism. U.S. Consul General Scott Rauland said that it is important for the U.S., Russia, and other nations to join together in facing the common threat of international terrorism.
