Consul General Focuses on Trade and Investment in Omsk

Consul General Stepanchuk made his first official trip to Omsk on September 9, 2005. During visits with Governor Leonid Polezhayev and the Deputy Mayor for Economics, Yevgeniy Frezorger, the Consul General focused on trade and increasing understanding through educational and cultural exchanges. Governor Polezhayev underscored the importance of developing people-to-people and professional exchanges as a precursor to expanding investment, while Deputy Mayor Frezorger described the city’s plans for new housing construction and programs to combat HIV/AIDS. Dynamic industries in Omsk include food processing, construction and petrochemicals.
The U.S. Consul General also met with leaders of the local business community to discuss economic developments in Omsk from a business perspective. Besides prospects for American investment, the Consul General focused on conditions faced by small and medium sized businesses and discussed programs available to promote cooperation with U.S. firms of similar size. In meetings with NGO representatives, the Consul General was briefed on the positive role being played by community based organizations in tackling social problems in Omsk.
