Consul General Scott Rauland traveled to Kurgan Oblast for his first official visit
September 24, 2004

Consul General Scott Rauland traveled to Kurgan Oblast for his first official visit on September 22-23, 2004. He met with Governor Bogomolov and discussed the industrial development of the region, upcoming gubernatorial elections, the problem of drug trafficking and –progress made in the construction of the chemical weapons destruction facility in Shchuchye. The Consul General also met with Mayor Yelchaninov and discussed sister-city relations with Appleton, Wisconsin. A delegation from Appleton was visiting Kurgan at that time, and signed an agreement renewing their Sister City relationship with Kurgan for another 3 years.

The Consul General also met with alumni of American exchange programs and representatives of NGOs involved in anti-drug awareness campaigns and youth movements. They discussed the importance of youth involvement in anti drug addiction campaigns and assistance provided by the local government for such initiatives.

Mr. Rauland also opened an exhibition entitled “The History of U.S.-Russian Summits” in the House of Arts Professionals (Dom Rabotnikov Isskustv) in Kurgan. During the first day the exhibition was attended by representatives of the cultural elite, government officials, the Wisconsin delegation and journalists.
