Consul Matt Purl Joins the Adam Klipple Jazz Quartet for Their Udmurt Concert
September 27, 2004
Matt Purl, Consul for Political and Economic Affairs, visited the Republic of Udmurtiya on September 26 and 27. While in Izhevsk, the capital of Udmurtiya, Matt Purl had the honor of introducing the Adam Klipple Quartet – the AK4 featuring percussionist Frank Colon – a jazz band touring Russia with the funding assistance of the U.S. government. The quartet played to a packed house at the Club Babylon in downtown Izhevsk. The AK4 went on to Irkutsk, and will return to Yekaterinburg’s consular district on October 1st when they play in Omsk (October 3), in Tuymen (October 4), and Yekaterinburg (October 5). AK4 toured Russia last year as part of the Jazz Ambassadors’ program.
In Izhevsk Mr. Purl also met with the Vice-Rector of the Udmurtia State University and the staff of the American Studies Center at the University, to discuss ways in which cooperation between the Consulate and the American Studies Center could be expanded. Mr. Purl then visited Votkinsk, the hometown of composer Peter Tchaikovsky. In Votkinsk he held discussions with the local branch of the Udmurtia State University, and then toured the Tchaikovsky Museum, located in the composer’s ancestral home on the shores of Votkinsk’s beautiful lake.
