On September 13-14, Consul General John Stepanchuk visited the Karabash Copper Mill (Krabashmed), northwest of Chelyabinsk. Vice President Dmirtry Saburov hosted Consulate staff to a tour and meeting with local environmental activists.  The plant, now owned by the Russian Copper Company, which has invested about $130 million in German, Dutch and Australian equipment to reduce sulfur emissions as well as to seal and replace old furnaces.  Installation of the equipment is nearly complete.  Russian Copper works in consultation with local environmental activists to reduce emissions and to rehabilitate the countryside, and has an active partnership with the town of Karabash as well. The Consul General toured the factory and met with its director. He also viewed large sludge hills, which are residue from previous mining, and may be removed for processing in the near future.
