Ambassador Vershbow Visits Tyumen and Tobolsk

Ambassador of the United States Alexander Vershbow is on a visit to Tyumen and Tobolsk October 3 and 4. In Tyumen the Ambassador met with Governor Sobyanin and Mayor Kirichuk, and discussed cooperation between the U.S. and the Tyumen region in economic development and investment, and in the fields of education and cultural exchange. In Tobolsk Ambassador Vershbow met with Mayor Vorobyov and then toured the famous White Kremlin of Tobolsk.

An important element of the Ambassador's visit was public outreach. He opened a new American Corner in Tyumen City Library, and later in the day opened an exhibit of Mosque architecture in the U.S., at the Tyumen Art Museum. The Ambassador also met with leaders of civil society organizations in both Tyumen and Tobolsk, to learn their views on developments in the region, and to discuss the ways in which the U.S. cooperates with Russian organizations to promote democracy and economic development. Ambassador Vershbow also had the opportunity to meet with university students in Tyumen and Tobolsk, and held lively discussions with them on U.S. - Russian relations, politics and culture in the U.S., and educational exchange programs. The Ambassador was highly impressed by the sharpness of the students; questions, and their high level of ability in English. Ambassador Vershbow's visit will conclude with an October 4 concert in Tyumen featuring the Adam Klipple Jazz Quartet. The Quartet is touring Russia forthe second year, with a grant from the U.S. Government.
