October 9, 2007
The week-long visit of Dr. Henry Steck, Professor of Political Science and Director of Center for International Education at State University of New York (SUNY) to the Urals and Western Siberia was intense. In Yekaterinburg he lectured on American Foreign Policy to students of the American Studies Chair of the Urals State University, delivered a report at the Conference on Cross-Cultural Communication at the Institute for International Relations, discussed international education perspectives with the faculty of the Social Studies Chair of the Liberal Arts University and met with the committee members of the Large Eurasian University (the Mega University), an ambitious joint-project of the local academic community and the government.
Dr. Steck’s next destination was the Siberian city of Omsk, where he was invited as a keynote speaker to the Conference on the Role of Universities in the Development of Regional International Relations. Beside the informative content of the conference it provided a valuable opportunity to meet with colleagues from the largest Siberian cities, besides Moscow, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The American professor also made a presentation on the U.S. system of education to over 70 students of the Foreign Languages Institute, met with the Chair of Omsk Regional Electoral Committee, Aleksandr Kushnarev, and had a lively discussion with alumni of USG exchange programs on the topic of global citizenship, tolerance and mutual understanding.
