October 28, 2006
On October 28th, 2006 PAS Yekaterinburg hosted a DVC with Dr. Sally Parry and Dr. Robert McLaughlin, professors of the University of Illinois and authors of the book We’ll Always Have the Movies on Hollywood’s formation of America’s understanding of World War II. The DVC was a part of the academic conference “1941: Year of Tragedy and Heroic Deeds” held by the Center of Military Studies and History (http://war-history.ru) of the Humanitarian University, Yekaterinburg. The conference marked the 65th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in the U.S.S.R. and of the U.S. entrance into the conflict. It brought together researchers from Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Vologda, and Izhevsk. Over 20 historians attended the DVC, where Dr. Parry and Dr. McLaughlin described the role movies played in American society before and during World War II. They also discussed the Hollywood image of allies (including Russians), enemies, and the war itself. The audience responded with many insightful questions. The Director of the Center of Military Studies and History Vadim Belolugov invited the American professors to continue their cooperation and to participate in coming conferences.
