November 10, 2005
Consul General John Stepanchuk made his first visit to Kurgan on November 7-8, where he opened an exhibit of American and Soviet World War two posters at the Oblast Art Museum. This exhibit has traveled throughout the Urals region. It will be on display at the Kurgan Oblast Art Museum until December, and will then move on to Surgut. At the exhibit opening Mr. Stepanchuk had the honor of meeting several veterans of the Second World War. While many visitors commented that it was the first time they had seen the American war posters, one of the veterans said he recognized the American posters from the American magazines he had read during 1940s
The Consul General called on Governor Bogomolov and Kurgan Mayor Yelchaninov. They discussed the progress of the Schuchye Chemical Weapons Destruction Facility and associated infrastructure projects. Governor Bogomolov noted that the project was helping to improve the living standards of local residents. They also discussed cooperation between the United States and Kurgan in trade, education and culture. Mayor Yelchaninov briefed Mr. Stepanchuk on the new management system Kurgan city recently adopted.
The Consul General also met with representatives of the Kurgan Rotary Club, and discussed preparations for the upcoming 15th anniversary of Kurgan’s Sister City relationship with Fox Cities, Wisconsin.
