First-ever Iftaar in Chelyabinsk
November 13, 2003

Consulate General Yekaterinburg staff hosted an Iftaar November 13 at the NGO Center, Chelyabinsk, where Muslims make up 20 % of the regional population. It was the first time the Consulate General has organized an Iftaar in the Urals Consular District. Around 30 guests represented a diverse range of the local Muslim cultural centers, which united Tatar, Bashkir, Azeri, Kazakh, Uzbek, and other ethnic communities. The Information Resource Center made a presentation on U.S. Government web sites on Islam which provide useful and up-to-date information on many topics from the basics of Islam to academic articles to world news. The IRC also distributed information packages, which contained a colorful brochure "Muslim Life in America" in Russian, an article “Ways of Islam in Modern Russia” from the Washington File in Russian, and a list of useful web sites. As a result of the presentation three Muslim leaders have already asked the IRC to subscribe them to the Washington File.
