U.S. Awards English Language Study Scholarships to Fifty Children from Low-Income Families in Bashkortostan, as English Language Program Continues in Ufa
December 7, 2004

Consul Matthew Purl visited the bilingual Bashkir-Russian school (Gymnazium 20) in Ufa on December 7th, where he handed out certificates to fifty children participating in a U.S. Government- financed program (ACCESS Microscholarships) that provides English language training at the Bashkir American Intercollege.  This program covers tuition costs for Bashkir children from low-income families to study English for two years. Representatives of the Bashkortostan Education Ministry, and representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present for the ceremony.  The event was covered by Bashkortostan television and radio, and included a show of the students’ impressive talent in dancing and singing in English and Bashkir.

This program is the continuation of a successful summer camp run in Ufa this past summer.
