WWII Commemoration Event in Yekaterinburg
September 2, 2005

On September 2nd, Consul General John Stepanchuk participated in an annual commemoration of the start of WWII.  The event was organized by the Yekaterinburg association, Families of Soldiers Killed in Action.  Along with members of the organization, government officials, foreign diplomats and religious leaders were in attendance.  Aleksey Zykov, the lead organizer, highlighted the important role of the Allied countries in WWII, specifically the lend-lease program.  In the spirit of cooperation, the U.S. national anthem was played for the first time in the commemoration’s history. Consul General Stepanchuk stressed the importance of remembering the war’s victims and the necessity of uniting against common threats to the world.

In April and May, the U.S. Consulate devoted a two-month long program to the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII.  This included a visit by the United States Air Force Jazz Band, Check Six, and a series of lectures by Professor Hubert Van Tuyll, an expert on lend lease.
