Death

If an American dies in Russia, the Consulate will attempt to locate and notify the next-of-kin and provide any possible assistance. We can provide help with arrangements and personal property, according to the wishes of the family.

Injury and Illness

The Consulate can assist Americans with locating English-speaking doctors or arranging medical evacuation to the U.S. or to medical facilities in nearby countries (usually Finland).

Destitution

Although the Consulate cannot give money to destitute Americans, we can assist in obtaining funds from relatives, friends, or other private sources and finding short-term solutions until funds arrive.

Missing Persons

The Consulate can coordinate with local authorities, such as police, hospitals and hotels, in an effort to locate a missing American. Please keep in mind that when the Consulate locates a person who has been reported missing, that information cannot be passed on to his or her family and friends until the individual authorizes the Consulate to do so.

Arrests

If an American citizen is arrested in Russia, he or she should ask the authorities to notify the U.S. Embassy in Moscow or the closest Consulate. Consuls cannot get people out of jail (Americans in Russia are, of course, subject to Russian laws). However, they can work to protect the legitimate interests of Americans and to ensure that they are not discriminated against due to their nationality. They can visit the prisoner, relay messages to his family, and provide a list of local attorneys as well as general information about local laws.

Victims of Violent Crime

The Consulate strives to provide every possible form of assistance to American crime victims. We can help coordinate medical care, work with local authorities and help people get in touch with their families.
