Scientific and Medical Researchers
Special visa processing procedures are necessary for visa applicants working in certain technical fields. These procedures affect not only research, but also presenting papers at conferences and consultations, as well as other activities.
The new procedures require a minimum of 14 business days for processing, but can take longer. We therefore advise applicants to apply no less than six weeks before their expected departure date. Applying two months in advance is even better. Applicants who are uncertain as to whether or not their applications will require additional processing may contact the Consular Section for more information.

- Your employer and your job
- The inviting organization
- The purpose of the trip
In addition to the application requirements for the visa type applied for, all applicants working in scientific and medical research fields should:
- Complete all application forms and provide supporting materials in English, if possible
- Present a detailed invitation letter that describes the specific research or scientific activities to be undertaken in the U.S. and provides full contact information for the U.S. host
- Complete form DS-157(pdf document /131Kb) , even if not otherwise required
- Present a scientific resume (CV) and list of publications
